About Working Labradors

Mango is a working labrador.
She is a pedigree dog that has been bred for generations for their excellent ability to retrieve birds when shooting.

Most working labradors look very different to typical heavily built labradors. So called Show labs are much chunkier and and look almost like a different breed to a working lab, which are generally smaller, faster and more athletic. Working labs will never win best of breed at dog shows as the chunky version is the preferred type, working labs however can win prizes with the ultimate accolade being the title of Field Trial Champion.

They are a really intelligent breed, that are extremely biddable and loyal, steady, calm and good with children.
Labradors are also quiet. Labradors that bark during shooting get disqualified from field trials so they are very quiet compared to many other breeds. They are unafraid of loud noises.
Working labs are really athletic and will run all day, they need lots of exercise!
When retrieving mango will wait until you tell her to go and then she launches straight after the ball, stick or whatever you are using. she won't give up and will search out the item at great speed using her excellent nose. On finding the ball she will return straight as an arrow to you every time.

Labradors originated in Labrador, Newfoundland where originally they were used to bring in fishermen's nets, They have a very dense coat and are enthusiastic waterdogs and are happy swimming in the sea even in surprisingly cold conditions! (you do have to make sure though that skinny labs dont get too cold - wind chill is not good for them).I haven't tried to get mango to pull a seine net but may try one day!
